What is a Flatlay?

An arrangement, which is… You guessed it… Laid flat. You can take a picture of anything in a flat lay, as long as it’s taken from a bird’s eye view.

What is it Used For?

Anything you want. Although the competition is tough. Flat lays are the go to arrangement for creators the world over, so if you want to be the best, you have to get creative

How Do I Create One?

It’s one of the easiest techniques to master. Simply arrange your objects, and take from a birdseye view.

Who is the Expert?

Romo Jack (@ponypork) is a creative based in Jakarta, Indonesia. His work has been featured on Instagram’s blog, and he is well know for the hashtag, #whatmyhandsdoing, which are a series of flatlays in colourful and quirky situations.

What’s Their Advice?

“For me, I don't have any absolute rules in props placement, something messy could draw more attention compared to neatly placed objects. Because maybe every scene and activity has its own atmosphere, I only try to try some different positions until I get the right mood. I believe every person has their own perspective.

My tips would be to play more with objects, different colours and dimensions, also don't be afraid to put irrelevant things into the mix.”
