Whalar at D&AD Festival 2019

Last week, Whalar sponsored the renowned D&AD festival. Read on to find out what we got up to, from our panel with @cestmaria, Boots and Instagram, to our live art gallery, and a legendary line up on our very own stage.

Creativity Off Grid: An Exploration of Boundary Pushing Social Content

Finding your community and building your brand; two concepts that become one and the same in the world of Instagram. Led by our Head of Creator Solutions, Jo Burford, ‘the platform’, ‘the creator’ and ‘the brand’ we’re brought to the table in the form of Sunil Singhvi, Strategic Partnerships Manager at Instagram, Marioly Vazquez, Content Creator best known as @cestmaria, and Claire Gibbs, Social Media Manager - Strategy and Innovation at Boots. The discussion touched on all things Instagram; including how brands like Boots find their most relevant audiences through creator collaborations as opposed to original content; how creators like @cestmaria have built brand identities that transcend the individual image; and how innovation from within Instagram is paving the way for new artist to emerge through IGTV.

Whalar’s gallery at the D&AD Festival 2019 was our opportunity to showcase some of our best work.  Prints of work from creators such as @itsjoeyyu, @thisisaliceskinner and @allthatisshe illustrated how the premium quality our collaborations have value both on and off the Instagram grid. Alongside the striking content, our Head of Design, Greg Haynes (@fybe.one), was attracting eyes through a unique interpretation of the Whalar logo in a stunning freehand demonstration of live art. By investing in a vibrant space that bustled with creativity, we drew compelling conversations from passing creatives who may not associate always associate high-end creativity with the influencer marketing space. Our focus on ‘Liberating the Creative Voice’ allowed us to draw back the curtain and reveal the world of creative opportunity brands can find in creators with influence.

The great thing about D&AD is the talent it attracts, and this was reflected in the content on all the stages - and in particular Whalar’s own stage; The Social Stage (conveniently located next to the cocktail bar…) We were lucky enough to host talented creatives on our stage such as Danny Boyle (director of Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire and the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony), Lauren Laverne (host of the 6Music Breakfast Show, and Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs), Billie J. D. Porter (journalist for Nylon and documentary maker for BBC Three), Pip Jamieson (founder of the Dots) and many more. It was great to see the stage area overflowing with attendees and eager to learn from these legendary names.
